10-Day Israel – Classical Journey

See what Moses saw, hear what David heard, walk where Jesus walked-be humbled, be blessed, be changed!

Itinerary

Day 1
USA, Tel Aviv, Israel
Depart the US for Israel.
Day 2
Tel Aviv to Jerusalem
Arrive in Tel Aviv. Tour group will be met at airport and assisted with arrival procedures. Motor coach transfer to Jerusalem for dinner and overnight.
Day 3
Bethlehem, Mount of Olives, Garden of Gethsemane
Following breakfast, we begin our day with a short drive to the town of Bethlehem (house of bread), originally a small village in the country of Judah. We visit Shepherds’ Field, where the Angel of the Lord visited the shepherds and informed them of Jesus’ birth (Luke 2:8-10). We will also visit the Church of Nativity, one of the oldest churches in the world, which tradition marks as the birthplace of Jesus. We return to Jerusalem and behold the breath-taking panorama of the Holy City from the top of the Mount of Olives! We will visit the Church of the Ascension-traditional site of Jesus’ ascension to Heaven- and other churches along the summit before walking down the Palm Sunday Road along the Mount of Olives. We will follow in the footsteps of Jesus, stopping at Dominus Flevit Church (The Lord Wept), marking the site of Jesus weeping over the city (Luke 9:37-42) and at the Garden of Gethsemane. We will spend time pondering and praying about the time Jesus spent here with his disciples before his arrest. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4
Pools of Bethesda, Via Dolorosa, Ecco Homo Arch, Holy Sepulchre
After breakfast, we enter the Old City and walk through the streets stopping at the Pools of Bethesda, where Jesus healed a paralytic (John 5:1-15), the Sisters of Zion Convent, built over the Praetorium, where Jesus was judged by Pontius Pilate and took up the cross and the Ecce Homo Arch (“Behold the Man” – John 19:5). This site marks the beginning of the Via Dolorosa, the Way of Sorrows, which tradition says Jesus walked with the cross to Calvary. Present day, it winds through the colorful Old City markets ending at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The Roman Catholic and Orthodox Church venerate this church as the place of crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 5
Temple Mount, Southern Steps, Jewish Quarter, Garden Tomb
We begin our day in the Old City with a visit to the Western (Wailing) Wall, revered as Judaism’s most sacred site and the last remnant of the Second Temple. We continue through the Old City to explore the Jewish Quarter and then to the Southern Steps of the Temple Mount to stand upon the original steps that Jesus climbed to enter the temple! We enjoy an afternoon visit to the Garden Tomb for a time of quiet reflection, worship, and communion. Located 500 meters to the north of the Damascus Gate, this ancient cemetery was discovered approximately 130 years ago and is believed by many to be the garden and sepulcher of Joseph of Arimathea, and therefore a possible site of the resurrection of Jesus. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 6
Qumran, Masada, En Gedi, Dead Sea
This morning, we head east through the Judean Desert to Qumran, site of the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. Historical research places a community of Essenes at this site, and it is possible that John the Baptist spent some time with the community here. We then continue along the Dead Sea to Masada, scene of the epic stand by Jewish rebels at the end of the great revolt against Rome, nearly 2,000 years ago. A cable car takes us to the top to view the extensive excavations and hear the story of how the site became one of Israel’s most important symbols. Leaving Masada, we stop for a brief “float” in the unsinkable water of the Dead Sea-the lowest point on earth. As we continue our drive along the Dead Sea, we will also enjoy a stop at the oasis at Ein Gedi, where David hid from King Saul. Dinner and overnight in Jerusalem.
Day 7
Beit She’an, Jordan River, Sea of Galilee (Tiberias)
Today we depart Jerusalem and head north to Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee stopping off at Beit She’an, to explore the extensive ruins of an ancient Roman city. Approaching the Sea of Galilee, we see Gadara (believed to be the site where Jesus cast out demons and sent them into the sea) and then stop at the River Jordan. Those wishing to be baptized will have the opportunity to do so. We soon make our way to the shores of the Sea of Galilee and board a replica “Jesus Boat” for a short sail. Dinner and overnight in Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee.
Day 8
Mount Arbel, Capernaum, Peter’s Primacy, Tabgha
Following breakfast, we begin our time in the Galilee on top of Mount Arbel overlooking the entire Sea of Galilee. Afterwards we make our way to Capernaum, visiting the ruins of this village, often called the hometown of Jesus, with its synagogue, a church marking the home of Peter, and dwellings from the time of Jesus. We continue to the chapel of the Primacy of Peter, where Jesus appeared to the Apostles after the resurrection, and reinstated Peter with the words “feed my sheep.” Also nearby, in Tabgha, is the site of the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes with its famed mosaic depicting the two fishes and the five loaves of bread. Dinner and overnight in Tiberias
Day 9
Caesarea Maritima, Tel Aviv, Free afternoon in Tel Aviv, USA
En route to Tel Aviv, we stop at the ancient port city of Caesarea Maritima, built by King Herod in honor of Emperor Augustus in the mid-first century BCE. Pontius Pilate also ruled the country from Caesarea. Excavations of this ancient place allow views of the Roman Theater, the hippodrome and Herod’s palace as well as moat and gates. Spend some free time in Tel Aviv to rest up before heading to the ancient seaport of Joffa from where King Solomon’s ships sailed to far-away ports and where the prophet Jonah fled from the call of God. We end our time together with dinner at a local restaurant then proceed to the airport for our return flight home.
Day 10
Depart for USA
