10-Day “Seven Churches of Asia Minor” Tour

Day 1
Overnight flight to Istanbul, Turkey.
Day 2
Upon arrival, you will be met at airport and assisted with arrival procedures and transfer to hotel. Enjoy the rest of the day at your own leisure. Overnight in Istanbul.
Day 3
After breakfast at the hotel, enjoy a guided tour to Topkapi Palace – royal residence of the Ottoman Sultans from 1465-1856- followed by visits to St. Sophia (Hagia Sophia), the greatest church in ancient Byzantium and the Blue Mosque, built 1609 and known for the blue tiles adorning the interior walls and for six minarets that tower over the skyline. We end our day enjoying the sights, sounds, aromas of the Spice Market-one of the oldest covered bazaars in the world! Overnight in Istanbul. (B)
Day 4
After breakfast at the hotel we drive to Gallipoli – significant as the landing & battle with the Allies in WWI- and visit Anzac Cove, Nek, Chunuk Bair, Lone Pine and 57th Regiment Memorial and War Museum. After our time here, we cross the Dardanelles strait (connecting the Sea of Mamara and the Aegean Sea.) for an overnight stay in Canakkale. (BD)
Day 5
After breakfast at the hotel we drive to legendary Troy- center of ancient civilizations and the site where the legendary Trojan War took place. Crossing the legendary mountain Ida, we arrive in Pergamum to visit the incredible ruins of the Acropolis, containing the ruins of this ancient city’s acclaimed library, and famous for the Alter of Zeus. During the writing of the letters to the Seven Churches, Pergamum was one of the most important cities in Anatolia. We also visit the ruins of the Asclepium, a sanctuary and healing center built in the name of Asclepius, the god of healing. Overnight in Kusadasi (B,D)
Day 6
This morning we take a short drive to visit the extensive and magnificent ruins of Ephesus- famed for the Temple of Artemis, the Letter to the Ephesians that Paul wrote, and as one of the Seven Churches addressed by John in Revelations. We continue to the marvelous and beautiful village of Sirince where you may be able to shop for and taste the delicious wines and olive oils produced in the village. Overnight in Kusadasi. (B,D)
Day 7
This morning, we drive to Izmir to visit the ancient site of Smyrna, one of the Seven Churches of Revelations. We will visit the ruins of the ancient market place followed by a visit to the oldest church in Izmir, dedicated to Saint Polycarp, a disciple of John, who became the bishop of Smyrna and was martyred here in the 2nd century. Following our time in Izmir, we drive to modern Akhisor, site of the old Lydian city of Thyatira. The longest of the seven letters was written to Thyatira, also noted as the home of Lydia, a well to do purple dye merchant who gave lodging to Paul throughout his stay in Phillipi. Overnight in Kusadasi. (B,D )
Day 8
We begin our day driving to Pamukkale through the fertile plain of Meander to visit the ancient city of Hierapolis, famous for its hot springs and natural white terraces formed by them. Hierapolis, part of the tri-city area with Colossae and Laodicea, was mentioned by Paul in his letter to the Colossians. The Roman period ruins, intertwined with the natural travertine formations offer a spectacular view. We will take time to walk among the ruins of the necropolis, see the ancient theater, and dip our feet into the hot springs. A short drive then takes us to the ruins of Laodicea. The letter addressing the church in Laodicea is the sternest of the seven letters, containing much reprimand, but no praise. Although there is no mention of heretics, persecutors and evildoers, the people of Laodicea were blamed for being “lukewarm”. Overnight in Pamukkale . (B,D)
Day 9
This morning we drive to Alasehir, a modern town descending from ancient Philadelphia. Attalos II, the king of Pergamum, established the city for his brother Eumenes and named it Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love. Being one of the Seven Churches, Philadelphia enjoyed much praise for their Christian community. Here, we visit the ruins of the ancient cathedral. We continue on to visit another of the Seven Churches, Sardis. In earlier times, the city was the capital of the Lydian Kingdom ruled by legendary King Croesus. Here, we visit the extensive ruins of the temple of Athena, Roman period shops, a gymnasium and a synagogue. Late afternoon flight from Izmir to Istanbul . Overnight in Istanbul (B)
Day 10
After breakfast at your hotel transfer to the airport for your flight .(B)
