Spending time walking among the ruins, we will view ancient monuments such as the Forum, the Odeon, the Library of Celsus, the Thermal Bath of Scolastika and the Great Theatre, built in the Greek era and reconstructed in the Roman period. Walk along the amazing Arcadian Way, where once Mark Anthony and Cleopatra rode in procession. On this excursion we will also visit the Church of the Virgin Mary and St. John’s Church built by Justinian in 527-565. We will set sail for Patmos arriving about 4:00 pm. On Patmos, Optional Excursion (fee is not included in the cruise price) to the Monastery and Grotto of St John. Departing the port of Skala by motor coach you will enjoy the short drive up to the Monastery of St John, which has been magnificently built within the walls of a strong fortification. A full & unforgettable day! (B, D on ship)
Day 7
Corinth & Mycenae
Following breakfast, we leave Athens for the ancient city of Corinth, the once glorious city near the Isthmus, where Paul met Aquila and Priscilla and spent a year and a half preaching the Word of God. Corinth is the city that inspired many of Paul’s most familiar letters, 1st & 2nd II Corinthians. Visit the Archaeological Museum, the Forum, the Temples and the famous Bema, where Paul stood before Gallio, accused by the Jews of Corinth. The ruins of this important cultural center are fascinating as we walk along the stone path that the Apostle Paul walked. After the visit to ancient Corinth we travel to Mycenae where the remains of the ancient city date back to the Bronze Age. Dinner and overnight in Athens. (B, D)
Day 8
Meteora
This morning we depart for Meteora, in Western Thessaly, where the world famous Byzantine monasteries perch precariously on top of rock pinnacles. These are built directly on the rock’s surface without foundations as such. Religious life, starting in the form of hermits’ dwellings, can be traced to around 1,000 AD. The first monastic community emerged in the 14th century, and was most successful during the 15th and 16th centuries. By the 17th century, the monastic population had dwindled to one-third of its original size. The monasteries represent a unique example of monastic life since the 14th century. We will have an opportunity to visit one or more of the monasteries. Dinner and overnight in Meteora. (B, D)
Day 9
Vergina, Veria (Berea), Thessalonica
Traveling north this morning, our first stop will be a visit to King Phillip’s (father of Alexander the Great) tomb in Vergina, one of the most outstanding finds in all of Greece. We soon begin touring picturesque Veria (Berea) and flourishing Thessaloniki, both important stops in the ministry of the Apostle Paul. In Veria, we will view the monument commemorating the site where Paul preached to the locals in AD 54. Paul visited Berea three times as did Silas and Timothy. In Thessaloniki, where Paul’s letters to them will come alive, we will tour the 5th-century Church of Agios Dimitrios, Greece’s largest church and renowned for stunning mosaics and frescoes and St. George’s Basilica, believed to be built over the synagogue where Paul preached. Dinner and overnight in Thessaloniki. (B, D)
Day 10
Thessalonica, Philippi, Kavala (Neapolis)
We begin the day by following the massive Byzantine wall to the citadel for a panoramic view of the city. Following the Apostle Paul today will include excursions to Phillippi and Kavala (Neopolis). Kavala, (ancient Neapolis) is one of the most attractive port towns in Greece and where Paul landed with his disciples, Timothy and Silas. Luke, the Evangelist, also came here from Troas. This ancient city of Neapolis was the first European city to accept Christianity. In Philippi, the first place in Europe where the apostle Paul and Silas preached, we will visit the ruins, the tribunal (Bema) where Paul was beaten, the prison where Paul and Silas were held in wooden stocks, and the small “Church of Lydia”, the stream where Paul baptized Lydia, the first Christian convert on European soil. See the famous Acropolis, the Market Place, Basilica, and the Theatre. We return to Thessalonica and visit St. Demetrius basilica, dedicated to a distinguished member of the Roman army and a martyred Christian convert before returning to the hotel. Dinner and overnight in Thessaloniki. (B, D)
